On Friday May 16th, 杏吧论坛 (CGCC) once again became a hub of energy, laughter, and problem-solving as 148 regional middle-and-high school students gathered for the college鈥檚 fourth annual Math Day. The event, a rapidly growing and much-anticipated tradition, brought together students from across the Gorge for a day dedicated to the fun鈥揳nd sometimes surprising鈥搒ide of mathematics.
From the moment students arrived, the campus buzzed with excitement. Students arriving from both sides of the river faced off in friendly competitions, tackled hands-on puzzles, and collaborated on challenges designed to stretch their problem-solving skills. But Math Day is about more than numbers. 鈥淲e want students to see math as a living, breathing part of the world around them,鈥 said CGCC Math Department Chair and event organizer Pam Koop. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about building confidence, making connections, and showing that math is for everyone鈥搉o matter where you start.鈥
From music to metrology to marshmallows to origami to CNC mills to programmable logic controllers, each activity offered a new way to experience the beauty and creativity of mathematics. This year鈥檚 guest lecturer was Dr. Matt Ciancetta from Western Oregon University, whose session was titled 鈥淭he Mathematical Vibrations of Music鈥.
For many participants, Math Day is a chance to see things in a new light. 鈥淚 love being able to show our students "math in the wild" and have them explore the real world connections to the content we learn in class,鈥 said Ashley Wright, the 7th-12th grade Math Instructor from Bickleton, WA. 鈥淚 know it takes a lot of work and planning to put these events together, and we appreciate it!鈥
CGCC President Dr. Kenneth Lawson emphasized the college鈥檚 commitment to supporting local youth. 鈥淓vents like Math Day are at the heart of our mission,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e here to open doors, spark curiosity, and help every student find their path鈥攚hether that鈥檚 in STEM, Arts & Humanities, or a skilled trade.鈥
Math Day 4 was made possible thanks to the hard work of CGCC faculty, staff, students, and community volunteers, as well as the generous financial support of the CGCC Foundation, Student Services, and the Gorge Stem Hub.
